Take a look at our Lucky 15 selections (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold) for the British meetings on Saturday, October 1, 2016.
SHALAA (Ascot 3.05) was talked of in glowing terms by Frankie Dettori after he won last year’s Middle Park Stakes, the Italian jockey intimating that he was the best juvenile he had ever sat on. The John Gosden-trained Invincible Spirit colt won five races after his Newbury debut, including Group 2 victories in the July Stakes at Newmarket and the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood. He also took the Group 1 Prix Morny on very soft ground at Deauville last August. Ring rust is going to be the issue with this classy colt, who suffered a pelvic injury in April and has not been seen since last September. However, if near his best, he should take a bit of beating over this 6f in the Group 3 Bengough Stakes, especially since he is unpenalised for his Group 1 victories.
CITY OF JOY (Redcar 2.10) may not have relished the Good to Soft ground at Newbury when failing to cope with Swiss Storm on his second start. Odds-on that day following a solid start to his career at Sandown, he was simply beaten by a decent son of Frankel, but was much the best of the others. He holds an entry in the Racing Post Trophy, so is quite highly regarded by Sir Michael Stoute and with title-chasing Jim Crowley on board, a big run is expected in the 7f maiden.
SOCIETY RED (Newmarket 4.35) is one of 30 runners scheduled to line up for the 150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes and one of a trio saddled by Richard Fahey. The fact that Paul Hanagan is booked for the Arcano colt signals plenty about his chance, although he will have to improve from his last outing when failing to give 7lb to Mister Belvedere when sent off favourite for a 7f novices’ event at Carlisle, having won on his debut at Thirsk. The ground is key. It was quick on the Rowley Mile last weekend and little has changed since.
ERVEDYA (Newmarket 4.00) can claim the Group 1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes for France. Three times a winner at the highest level over this 1m trip last season, including when beating Found in the Coronation Stakes on Good to Firm ground at Ascot, she has been seen just three times this term and was not beaten far behind Ribchester in the Jacques Le Marois at Deauville in August. Jean-Claude Rouget has her back against her own sex today and while any moisture in the ground will help her cause, she should be able to put it up to likely favourite Alice Springs, who will be making her eighth start of the campaign.
