LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

CLOUDY DREAM (Haydock 1.25) has plenty going for him in the 2m graduation chase, not least the excellent form of trainer Malcolm Jefferson. The six-year-old, who was runner-up in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr in April, made a splendid start to his chasing career when winning a three-runner beginners’ chase at Carlisle last month with relative ease. Though he would ideally be suited by better ground than the anticipated soft ground he will encounter today, he is in receipt of 11lb from his four rivals and will surely go on to win better races than this.

MANGO CAP (Ffos Las 2.55) failed to build on his come-from-behind 3m win at Perth when making a blunder at the last flight in a 2m5½f handicap hurdle at Ayr last month. Other than that, he did not do a lot wrong on that occasion after being produced late with a strong run. The David Pipe-trained five-year-old takes on six rivals in a similar event and runs off the same mark of 119. Given that he is in receipt of 6lb and upwards from all but one of the contestants, with David Noonan taking off a further 3lb, hopes are high that he can gain a third success over hurdles in nine tries.

FOX APPEAL (Ascot 2.45) takes a steep drop in class, having been campaigned in some top-quality handicap chases last season and may be able to gain a confidence-boosting win. Emma Lavelle has picked her spots so far this season and while the selection has plenty to find on his first two starts of the season – there was precious little to enthuse about when beaten 13 and 18-lengths respectively at Market Rasen and Chepstow, those were much better contests than today’s Class 3 handicap chase over 2m5f. Good ground or slightly better would be perfect for the nine-year-old (pictured below) who is now 13lb below his last winning mark.

CADLAND LAD (Newcastle 6.45) has become as frustrating as waiting for a wage cheque that never arrives. However, you hold out hope that someday all will come good. In the case of John Ryan’s three-year-old, he is putting the work in and has been luckless in reward. It is now 21 starts without getting his head in front when it matters, but he has been placed nine times and today could be the day it all comes good. While he remains on the same mark of 49 that saw him touched off in a 6f Chelmsford City maiden last time, a change of scenery – a first trip to Newcastle’s all-weather track – and useful 7lb claimer Jonathan Fisher aboard, might help him land the 6f apprentice handicap.
