LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

D’BAI (Newmarket 2.00) looks set for a bright future following his smart staying-on second to Dubai Hero in what looked a hot juvenile maiden at the July meeting. The winner looks set to tackle Group company later next week, but the selection was the one to take out of the race. Very green early on, once the penny dropped he really grabbed the fast ground up the final climb. His trainer Charlie Appleby holds him high in the juvenile pecking order and it would be no surprise to see this Dubawi colt go on to much better things. This 7f maiden should provide clues as to just how good he is.

MANSON (Ascot 3.20) could earn a trip to the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington should he land the competitive mile handicap. The Dominic Ffrench Davis-trained three-year-old has run his best races on quicker ground and did not get enough cover under Ryan Moore when very well backed at Newmarket last time. He was ultimately beaten two-and-a-half-lengths by the re-opposing Von Blucher, who is 7lb worse off today. Providing the rain stays away, the selection should be able to pick them off on this stiff mile, which looks the minimum he requires now.

WINGS OF DESIRE (Ascot 4.30) has a great opportunity to land the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes for John Gosden and jockey Frankie Dettori. Winner of the Dante Stakes at York, he then finished fourth in the Derby behind Harzand in ground softer than ideal. It was a fine run in the circumstances and he may well have found the undulating track against him that time. A return to a more conventional track and better ground should give him every opportunity to stick it to his elders.

WOWCHA (Newcastle 2.20) ran well here on her penultimate start to get within three and a half lengths of Awesome Quality, who, in truth, did little to frank the form next time. The selection could have done with a slightly easier surface than she got at Doncaster last time when second to Bint Arcano. More forceful tactics did not seem to help and she appears best coming from slightly off the pace, as she has a good turn of foot. Beaten favourite on three of her last four outings, John Quinn’s runner is getting expensive to follow, but her odds are likely to be far less restrictive tonight and she rates a value play in the 6f handicap off a 1lb higher mark.

Ascot 2016 Day 3 - stalls.jpg

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

ARIENA (Chepstow 5.50) can get off the mark at the third attempt in the 6f fillies’ maiden for the Clive Cox team. The daughter of Arcano made a promising debut at Salisbury wen going down a length and three-quarters to subsequent Listed runner-up Hellofahaste in a big-field 6f novices’ event, when keeping on well after finding a bit of trouble in running. Made favourite to win a fillies’ maiden at Newbury last time, she found Madam Dancealot too good, which was not surprising since that one was good enough to run in the Queen Mary previously. She should take all the beating if replicating that level of form.

IRISH ROOKIE (Ascot 3.30) has the class to land the Listed Valiant Stakes for trainer Martyn Meade. Sixth in the 1000 Guineas last year, she had an eventful Classic campaign in which she was almost exclusively campaigned at the top level, including when runner-up in the French 1000 Guineas and third in the Sun Chariot. Having returned from a Grade One at Belmont Park last month, she was a fine fourth on rattling fast ground in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket behind Alice Springs. She is in the Matron Stakes but Meade drops her in class for the mile today and while she could do with a bit of cut underfoot, she should make a bold bid.

ROSENTAL (York 7.30) was twice a winner in France before joining Luca Cumani and having her first run for him at Beverley in May. Formerly owned by Godolphin and in the care of Andre Fabre, she appeared to handle fast ground well enough in succumbing to Loaves And Fishes in a 1m2f handicap. Upped in class last time, she was fourth of 11 in a Listed fillies’ and mares’ race on the all-weather at Newcastle over a similar trip, shaping as though she would want a little further. Today’s Listed 1m2f event looks a little less competitive and the jockey boking looks significant – Jim Crowley is banging in the winners with unnerving regularity at present.

GOLDEN REIGN (Newmarket 7.40) may well get off the mark at the fourth attempt for trainer William Haggas in the 1m4f maiden. After a promising debut in good to soft ground on the Rowley Mile in April, she took a step back when a well-beaten favourite at Goodwood when stepped up to 1m2f. However, she was not beaten far when third of five to Blind Faith at Chelmsford last time in a race bereft of a true pace. She goes up in trip tonight and could be the value against a couple of inexperienced rivals.

Newbury Races

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

ILLUMINATE (Newbury 3.35) has been campaigned at the top level ever since winning the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot 2015. Touched off in the Cheveley Park at Newmarket last September, she then ran creditably in the Breeders’ Cup Turf when trying a mile for the first time. Tough well beaten on her return to action after seven months off in the 1000 Guineas, she looked to be nearing her best when a close-up fifth to Quiet Reflection in the Commonwealth Cup on ground softer than ideal. She is a filly who needs faster ground to show her best and a drop down to Group 3 class in the 6f Hackwood Stakes might be just the confidence-booster she needs.

TOWN’S HISTORY (Ripon 3.10) won his Chelmsford 6f maiden in February and has had three unsuccessful runs since. The Godolphin three-year-old Hard Spun gelding has not been beaten far on his last two starts, however, latterly when upped in trip to 10.5f on unsuitably heavy ground when touched off by Jaameh 16 days ago. His pedigree suggests he should appreciate faster ground and today’s slight drop in trip to an extended 1m1f is expected to help his chance.

LUSORY (Newmarket 5.30) has divided opinion on his sole run at Haydock. While he won a weak race and stayed on very strongly over the mile, he looked as green as grass in doing so. There is no doubt the raw ability is there and he could end up being a good deal better than an 86-rated handicapper, yet he has a bit to prove in taking on more seasoned handicappers over 1m2f this afternoon. Still, the Shamardal colt will be better for this quicker ground than the good to soft he encountered on his first start. The only worry is it may be a shade too quick.

PRINCE OF ISLAY (Lingfield 6.40) has the assistance of one of the most in-form jockeys around and Jim Crowley knows this five-year-old well, trained as he is by his sister-in-law Amanda Perrett, who is in great form herself. He sports a visor for the first time in the 1m6f handicap, carries top weight and is stepping up in trip tonight. The form of his narrow Chepstow second to Urban Space on his penultimate start looks solid enough and while no world-beater, a replication of that level of form will see him in the mix.

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

WEST COAST FLYER (Haydock 4.25) looked a horse to follow when staying on nicely at Newcastle on just his fourth career start. He gained a second win that day, despite still having to be ridden from some way out. He showed signs of inexperience but is a big, scopey individual who should keep progressing. The soft ground is an unknown but he is on an upward curve.

NOBLY BORN (Newbury 3.40), a half-brother to several winners, notably 1m Group 1 winner Peeress, was behind stablemate Spiritous on his Newmarket debut, but showed he’d learned plenty next time out when scoring easily at Yarmouth over 6f. John Gosden’s representative was always up with the pace and quickened up nicely. His breeding suggests he should progress to be well above average and he handled the fast ground.

TRINITY STAR (Pontefract 8.05) has had five previous trips to tis track and has either won (twice) or been placed. Michael Dods’ five-year-old won here over a mile off a mark of 75 in October and was beaten only a neck off 1lb higher upon his return to the Yorkshire track 18 days ago. He does take a step up in class today, but there appears to be plenty of pace in the race at which to aim and that is very much in his favour.

SOUTH SEAS (Haydock 2.40) looks to old an obvious chance of following up his debut win in a 6f soft-ground Windsor maiden for Andrew Balding. The son of Lope De Vega, who fetched 145,000 guineas as a yearling, certainly knew is job, powering to an eight length success. Hs trainer had thoughts about running him at Royal Ascot without a run, such was the ability he’d shown at home and he should be able to win this 6f novices’ race before moving on to much better things.

Newmarket July 2.jpg

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

BLETCHLEY (Newmarket 3.45) has a decent chance of landing the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes for Ralph Beckett. The daughter of Makfi scored on her 5f Nottingham debut, despite showing signs of inexperience and took a step up in class in her stride on her next outing, when beaten a short-head over the extra furlong, coming from off the pace to get involved. There is no reason why she will not take another step forward and while this is more competitive still, this ground is likely to be ideal.

USHERETTE (Newmarket 4.15) can score for the seventh time in an eight-race career in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes. Andre Fabre’s Shamardal filly won both the 1m1f Group 2 Dahlia Stakes on the Rowley Mile in May and followed up back at a mile in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot last time (the re-opposing Always Smile well held). She was a little edgy in the preliminaries at Ascot but backers rarely had a moments’ worry, despite idling once eased down. Better ground will suit her, even though she handles cut underfoot.

CAMARGUE (Chester 7.20) went to Royal Ascot with connections quietly confident of a decent run in the Queen Mary. They had every reason to, given she had shown plenty in defeat at Wolverhampton (not jockey Joe Fanning’s finest hour) and subsequently scored at Ascot with ease. However, she found Lady Aurelia much too good in that Group 2, but the feeling is the soft ground may have been a factor and she is probably a lot better than she showed that day. Mark Johnston’s filly runs in the 5f conditions race and should be the one to beat.

LONDON PROTOCOL (York 5.05) made much of the running in a well-contested 7f handicap at Sandown last Saturday off the same mark of 87 that he goes off today. The rain softened ground made it a slog and yet while pulling hard in the early stages, he saw out the hill well, finishing third. As long as those exertions have not taken an undue toll, the Karl Burke-trained three-year-old would look to hold a reasonable chance of making the frame again in this 7f apprentices’ handicap.

Horse racing Lucky 15 – Thursday’s top selections

It is the first day of Newmarket’s prestigious July meeting.

Each day Bet4Causes will provide you with a preview of the day’s racing, offering what the experts feel will be the value bets of the day.

Take a look at our Lucky 15 selections (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold) for the British meetings on Thursday, July 7, 2016.

Newmarket July1.jpg

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

THE GREY GATSBY (Newmarket 3.15) gets the NAP vote on a cracking card on the opening day of the three-day July Meeting. Kevin Ryan’s five-year-old has been a little expensive to follow since winning the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes in September 2014. He has subsequently run some big races in defeat, including runner-up placings in the Dubai Turf, Price Of Wales’s Stakes and Eclipse (last season), and opened his account this term with a four and a half-length fourth to My Dream Boat in the Prince Of Wales’s Stake at the Royal meeting. There should be no excuses today. The 1m4f trip for this Group 2 and quick ground is ideal. He has had a run to blow away the cobwebs.

SIXTIES GROOVE (Epsom Downs 6.10) has one win from five starts but can double that tally in the opening 1m2f handicap. Jeremy Noseda’s three-year-old scored off a mark of 63 on the all-weather at Kempton last month on his handicap debut, despite hanging left into the whip, more out of immaturity than anything else. Upped to 1m3½f at Windsor and hiked 8lb for his victory, he travelled very well but ran out of puff on the rain-softened ground. He is a bit better than that and has a fair chance off the same mark of 71 tonight.

PUMBLECHOOK (Doncaster 5.05) was third to subsequent Dante winner Wings Of Desire on his Wovlerhampton debut and was well backed to win a Pontefract maiden auction event over 1m4f last time. He duly delivered and now takes a step up in class for his handicap debut, having received a mark of 80. Lucy Wadham’s representative, a son of Dalakhani, should like the good to soft ground and while it is still early days, he looks a horse to put in the notebook for the future.

JACK BEAR (Newbury 8.40), a son of US Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes runner-up Joe Bear, is unlikely to live up to the exploits of his sire. Having been switched from Jonathan Portman’s yard and having his first run for seven months, he made a winning stable debut for Harry Whittington in a staying handicap at Nottingham last month. Jack Bear refused to settle yet he routed his seven rivals, with decent types such as Minstrels Gallery in behind. He looked a seriously well-handicapped horse off a mark of 64 and the handicapper has hiked him 9lb for that five-length soft-ground success. The expected good to firm ground may not be ideal, but his pedigree suggests he should handle it and he would appear to have a fair chance of taking the 1m5f handicap.

LUCKY 15 SELECTIONS

BATEEL (Newmarket 2.45) has twice been a beaten favourite on her first two starts of the season, having won all three starts as a three-year-old. Those two defeats came over 1m4f in Listed company at Goodwood and the David Simcock-trained daughter of Dubawi now runs over a more conventional track and sports a hood for the first time, having finished fifth of six last time. In fairness, the ground was lively enough for her last time, she did not get a clear passage and she holds Mr Singh on that run. She has a good chance of winning the Listed Fred Archer Stakes.

DARK INTENTION (Chester 3.00) was not particularly well supported in a maiden here on her penultimate start, yet she ran a fine second on her seasonal return. While she had no chance with the winner, she had six other rivals well beaten. That was over what appeared to be over an inadequate seven-furlongs and while she was well held subsequently at York over 1m2½f that was in a tougher handicap than she run in today. She has the highest official mark in the race and drops back in trip to 7½f.

STEVE ROGERS (Newcastle 4.15) can win a strong-looking renewal of the ‘Pitmen’s Derby’. The Northumberland Plate was first established in 1833 and it is so known because the local miners were given the day off to go and watch it. This will be the first renewal of this ultra-competitive stayers’ handicap run on the all-weather and the selection was made favourite for the Chester Cup last time. Roger Varian’s runner travelled very well but found little off his 6lb higher mark for his Kempton win on his return to action. He has a decent draw and a return to an artificial surface should help.

BAADI (Windsor 3.15) won his maiden here in April and followed up in an extended 1m3f handicap off a mark of 84 with a hard-fought success here on good ground last month. The drying ground may was against him when he was scheduled to run here recently, so he was saved for this 1m2f handicap and a 4lb rise for Chalie Fellowes’ representative should not be a major problem as he bids for a hat-trick.
